The Sound of Democracy Dying: Listening Sessions

The purpose of the Listening Sessions is to bring together sound artists and researchers from different traditions to share and reflect on audio work from their varied projects that explore threats and challenges to democracy from the perspective of sound:

• Ellie Armon Azoulay is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of English Studies at Durham University, UK. She is also a DJ, curator and cultural historian whose work focuses on archives of music and photography, exploring diasporic communities, music collecting, and cultures of protest and resistance. She is completing her first book, Reclaiming the Lore: African American Music Collectors.
• Robert Willim is an artist and Associate Professor of Digital Cultures at Lund University. His work explores imaginaries, media-related practices and human experiences of technology, and his most recent book is entitled Mundania: How and Where Technologies are Made Ordinary.
• Carla J. Maier (Humboldt University of Berlin) and Eleni-Ira Panourgia (Lund University) will share a collaborative project. Maier works at the intersection of sound studies, cultural anthropology and postcolonial studies and is the author of Transcultural Sound Practices: British Asian Dance Music as Cultural Transformation. Panourgia is a sound artist and Assistant Professor in Artistic Research and AI at Malmö Theatre Academy.

A closing discussion will be led by a panel of expert listeners:

• Sima Wolgast is docent in psychology at Lund University whose research focuses on integrating psychological and psychotherapeutic knowledge across diverse contexts, including the performing arts.
• Lucy Cathcart Frödén is a researcher on the LISTEN project at Malmö University and her work investigates the role of artistic collaboration in social change.

The Listening Sessions event is open to the public and to researchers from any and all traditions, who may contribute to the discussion or attend in a purely listening capacity.
